PEC Ltd, a state-run trading company, invited bids to import 61,000 metric tons of lentils to build stockpiles and ease a domestic shortage of the commodity.

PEC will buy 40,000 tons of yellow peas from Canada, France, Germany or Ukraine for delivery in November at Vishakhapatnam, Kolkatta, Mumbai or Tuticorin ports. Suppliers have until July 12 to submit bids, the New Delhi-based company said in a tender document on its Web site.

PEC will buy a further 21,000 tons of chick peas and red lentils in lots of 1,000 tons each for shipment between August and November at the Mumbai port, it said in separate tender document. The contract closes on July 12.

India will buy 1.5 million tons of lentils including gram and yellow peas to boost local stocks, Junior Finance Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal said on May 8.

The government contracted to buy 1.04 million tons as of June 28, and 187,000 tons have already reached ports, according to the food ministry.
