State-owned trading firm PEC has invited bids for the import of 50,000 tonnes of yellow peas for sale in the domestic market.

NEW DELHI: State-owned trading firm PEC has invited bids for the import of 50,000 tonnes of yellow peas for sale in the domestic market.

The bid will close on March 30 and a decision on awarding the contract will be taken on the same day, the firm said in a statement on its website.

The company said bidders should source 25,000 tonnes each of yellow peas from the US and Canada.

Yellow peas should be from the 2010 crop year, it said, adding, the shipment should reach Kolkata port in May 2011.

PEC, MMTC and other state-run trading agencies like STC import different varieties of pulses on behalf of the government to augment the domestic supply.

India imports 3-4 million tonnes of pulses annually to meet domestic demand.
