Paddy acreage rises; pulses, coarse cereals take beating

Areas under paddy cultivation in the ongoing kharif season rose by five per cent to 344.8 lakh hectares so far, against 329.5 lakh hectares in the same period last year.


NEW DELHI : Areas under paddy cultivation in the ongoing kharif season rose by five per cent to 344.8 lakh hectares so far, against 329.5 lakh hectares in the same period last year.

However, areas under pulses continued to witness a downward trend with over 16 per cent fall to 97.8 lakh hectares (LH) till August 29, against 116.9 LH in the corresponding period a year ago, an official statement said here today.

Similarly, the oilseed acreage rose marginally to 172.9 LH from 170.1 LH in the year-ago period.

Continuing with the previous week's downward curve, areas under groundnut have declined to 50.3 LH, compared with 51.5 LH in the same period last year.

Areas under bajra, maize and jowar have also declined. The acreage under coarse cereals declined to 191.6 LH, compared with 207.9 LH in the period under review.

The acreage under soyabean, however, has shot up to 95.2 LH against 87.2 LH in the same period last year.

In sync with expectations, cotton and sugarcane acreage has declined, due to deficient rainfall in some of the major producing states.

Areas under cotton dipped marginally to 89.1 LH, against 90.9 LH in the corresponding period a year ago. Similarly, sugarcane acreage declined to 44.1 LH, compared with 53 LH in the year-ago period.
