Overseas call: Indian farmers seek jobs in Canada

CHENNAI: Indian ryots are said to be in great demand abroad, especially in Canada, to which over 100 farmers from the country are making a beeline in search of greener pastures.
Canada, with 1% of India’s population, offers 95% employment opportunities. A XIIth class pass and a networth of Rs 1 crore are all that a farmer needs to have to head to Manitoba, a province in Canada where farmers are in tremendous demand, World-wide Immigration Consultancy Services (WWICS) CMD BS Sandhu told reporters here on Tuesday.
Contract farming is in vogue and in this province alone, farms in the 100 acre to 1,000 acre range are ready for being taken over. A farmer by definition need not simply cultivate paddy. He could be in rubber, coconut or any other kind of farming activity, he said.
“Already, over 50 ryots from the North have emigrated through us to Canada. Every month, 10 to 15 farmers apply for immigration and we have about 110 applications waiting to be processed,” he claimed.
Up north, land prices are soaring and an acre fetches between Rs 20 and Rs 25 lakh. “Those holding five and six acres will meet the benchmark. Farmers in the north are aggressive by nature and always on the move. Five of the 110 applicants are from south,” Mr Sandhu said.
Set up in 1993, WWICS offers opportunities in education, professional and business avenues in countries like Canada, Australia, UK, the US and New Zealand. Its annual turnover is around Rs 12 crore. WWICS is in the process of tying up with the EU to firm up the flow of Indian professionals following a meeting on October 16.
There is an acute shortage of professionals in Europe. India, being a young nation, with 40% of its population below 40 years, offers a platform for a steady flow of people. “The monthly requirement of Canada alone is 10,000 workers and the employment scope is across sectors,” it claims.
