Onion prices remain stable at Lasalgaon after correcting on Tuesday
PUNE: After a sharp fall on Tuesday in the wholesale markets, onion prices were marginally up across Maharashtra on Wednesday. At Lasalgaon, the key onion market in the country, prices remained stable at Rs 55/kg.

"Prices were marginally up today at Lasalgaon and will remain stable for next few days," said Sohanlal Bhandari, president, Nashik District Onion Traders Association.

The Tuesday's fall was due to the checking of traders' godowns carried out by district administration of Nashik from Saturday and arrival of imported cargo.

But traders are confident that the prices will remain stable till September end. "There is no rainfall and no guarantee of the kharif crop. Prices cannot come down at least for month, irrespective of any government action," said a trader from Nashik.

Absence of rains has stalled transplantation of onion saplings, which can result in delay in kharif crop from Maharashtra. Kharif planting is expected to be good in other onion growing states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar etc. Arrival of fresh onions is expected to improve from October.
