Onion prices drop by Rs 5 per kg at wholesale markets in Kolkata
Onion prices which were hovering around Rs 45 - Rs 55 per kg last weekend has climbed down by Rs 5 per kg as arrivals is likely to improve.

Gurupada Sinha, a leading onion merchant, said ""Prices were around Rs 4500 per quintal - Rs 5500 per quintal a day ago. But today prices have shown a slight decline. We are expecing that 20 trucks of onion will come from Nasik today which may ease the supply situation and bring down prices.""
In Kolkata, prices of of onions were varying from market to market. While in some markets a kg of onion was being sold at Rs 65 per kg in some other markets a kg of onion was fetching Rs 80 per kg. "Unscrupulous traders are playing havoc at the retail end to jack up prices. If prices at the wholesale market was Rs 55 per kg then retail customers should have got it at Rs 60 a kg. There is no reason for prices to go up to Rs 80 per kg."
However, onion merchants in Kolkata said that rains were still continuing in Maharashtra which would have an impact on supply side.
