NEW DELHI: Northern India is likely to get another round of wet weather in a week owing to an active western disturbance, scientists at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

“The system (western disturbance) which is approaching is more active than the current system and it is likely to cause rainfall in the plains also,” said K Sathi Devi, head of national weather forecast at IMD in Delhi.

She said a weak weather system is currently affecting Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, states which are likely to see mild rainfall for the next two days.

The next western disturbance will reach the western Himalayan region by February 2 or February 3 and affect the plains from February 4, inducing rainfall in regions such as Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi, Devi said.

Cold wave conditions are, however, unlikely to develop since minimum temperatures do not fall in cloudy weather, which is a primary trait of a western disturbance, she said. “We are predicting dense fog in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, UP and north Rajasthan for today and tomorrow,” Devi said.

The department has predicted dense to very dense fog in Bihar till Tuesday. Minimum temperatures could fall by one to two degrees in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha and Telangana in the next two to three days, IMD said in a forecast on Monday.
