No proposal to alter duty structure import of wheat: Govt

There have been demand from various industry representatives to reduce the 40% duty on import of wheat to augur domestic supply to contain prices of wheat.

There is no proposal to alter the duty structure on imports of wheat at present, the department of food and public distribution said in a statement on Thursday.

"..at present, there is no proposal to alter the duty structure on imports of wheat," it said.

The department is also keeping close watch on the market price of the grain, the statement added.


There have been demand from various industry representatives to reduce the 40% duty on import of wheat to augur domestic supply to contain prices of wheat.

India has produced 112 MT of wheat in the current marketing season, according to the government.

The Food Corporation of India (FCI), which undertakes distribution of food grains under food security measures, has procured approximately 266 LMT of wheat till June 11, during RMS 2024.

"After meeting the requirement for Public Distribution System (PDS) and other Welfare Schemes, which is approximately 184 LMT, sufficient stock of wheat will be available to undertake market interventions, as and when required, " the statement added.
