Nilgiris tea may get GI tag in line with Darjeeling

On the lines of Darjeeling teas, Nilgiris highgrown brokens and Assam Orthodox teas would soon be registered under Geographicial Indication (GI).

COIMBATORE: On the lines of Darjeeling teas, Nilgiris highgrown brokens and Assam Orthodox teas would soon be registered under Geographicial Indication (GI), said Tea Board chairman Basudeb Banerjee.

Logo for the Nilgiris tea is ready and registration is likely in November. The registration with Indian Registry in Chennai would facilitate easier marketing and higher price realisation, he added.

Mr Banerjee said that of the Rs 1,000-crore package for tea industry anounced by the Centre in the Eleventh five-year plan, Rs 450 crore would be spent for uprooting and replanting of tea saplings across the country and the remaining amount would be distributed for research and development, promotional activities and for subsidy schemes for orthodox.
