New body for networking of fishermen inaugurated
A new society, which aims to reach out to the fishermen and play an important role in providing technical assistance to them, has been inaugurated here on Monday by Union Minister of Sate for Commerce Jairam Ramesh.

KOCHI: A new society, which aims to reach out to the fishermen and play an important role in providing technical assistance to them, has been inaugurated here on Monday by Union Minister of Sate for Commerce Jairam Ramesh
Launching the Network for Fish Quality Management and Sustainable Fishing (NETFISH), a registered society under the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), the Minister said the initiative would have a national footprint and reach out to fishing communities in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Maharastra and Gujarat.
This network will play an important role in providing technical assistance to fishermen so that practises being adopted in the country are internationally acceptable.
A consultant for Tuna had joined MPEDA. Marine products industry has been dominated by shrimp. This was the first time that systematic efforts were being made with regard to Tuna, he said.
Andamans has been identified as the thrust area for tuna. By November a meeting of stakeholders would be held at Port Blair, he said, adding there was a great potential for diversifying into tuna.
Ramesh said Centre would provide all assistance and there was a great opportunity for India to enter tuna market.
A major agreement has been signed with the Swiss government for organic farming in aquaculture.
State Fisheries minister S Sarma stressed the need to maintain quality in the seafood sector.
