NAFED to sell 2 lakh tonnes of mustard seeds

In an effort to ease the shortage of edible oils during Dusshera and Diwali, NAFED is planning to sell over 200,000 tonnes of mustard seeds to local crushers.

NEW DELHI: In an effort to ease the shortage of edible oils during Dusshera and Diwali, National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) is planning to sell over 200,000 tonnes of mustard seeds to local crushers.

The cooperative will sell the oilseed from its stockpile of 400,000 tonnes built over the past year, NAFED Managing Director Alok Ranjan told media.

"We're going to sell mustard seeds from today as it will help improve edible oils availability in the festive season," Ranjan said, adding mustard oil is the third most used cooking oil in the country.

Mustard seeds make up 70 per cent of the winter-sown oilseeds. NAFED has imported 51,000 tonnes of edible oils between April 1 and October 17, he added.
