NAFED looks at commercial procurement of oilseeds
The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED), the nodal agency for oilseeds and pulses procurement on behalf of the Centre, is planning to procure farm commodities for commercial purposes.
"We will commercially procure agricultural commodities," NAFED Chairman Bijender Singh said.
Nafed's role as government's nodal purchasing agency for oilseeds and pulses has squeezed in the last few years because of higher market price of these commodities compared to minimum support price announced by the Centre.
After the inter-state conference on Rabi oilseeds, Singh said NAFED may not be able to procure major oilseeds like mustard under the price support scheme as the market prices of the oilseeds are higher than the minimum support prices.
The public sector cooperative had procured over 20 lakh tons each of mustard seeds in both 2004-05 and 2005-06. It has still about two lakh tons left from the 2005-06 crops.
He said NAFED will procure if market price goes below the MSP of oilseeds and pulses. However, preparations are on to intervene in case the market prices fall below MSPs, he added.
Current price of mustard in domestic market is Rs 2,200-2,300 per quintal against MSP of Rs 1,800 a quintal.
Major mustard-growing states like Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab have estimated either lower or same level of production of the oilseed in their states.
