Mushroom cultivation gaining popularity in India
Mushroom cultivation is one of the promising and profitable enterprises that has gained popularity and is being taken as one of the agro allied professions to traditional agriculture.
Punjab State accounts for about 50 percent of the total mushrooms produced in the country, produced by more than 400 mushroom growers in the State, this was stated by P K Khanna and S Kappor, scientists of the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.
Addressing the farmers at Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Bud Singhwala in Moga district yesterday, they said that mushroom cultivation being an in-door crop does not require arable land and can be carried out on a small non-agricultural land where the mushroom farm can be setup.
According to them the University has developed four good quality mushroom varieties and recommended for seasonal cultivation suited to Punjab's climatic conditions.
These are Button Mushroom, Oyster Mushroom of Dhingri under winter months from October to March and Paddy straw mushroom and milky mushroom during summer months from April to September.
