SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government will not scrap subsidies for agriculture in order to help marginal farmers in the state, Planning Board Vice-Chairman A H Scott Lyngdoh said on Monday.
After a meeting with various officers of agriculture and allied departments, Lyngdoh said the state government would continue with subsidies to farmers as they were "unable to stand on their own feet and reach the status of progressive farmers."
To make the ongoing "Year of the Farmer" celebrations more meaningful, the state government would provide 1,126 power tillers to farmers at a subsidised rate of Rs 45,000 each, Lyngdoh told reporters.
He said the state government would subsidise power pumps at Rs 10,000, paddy reapers at 25 per cent, hiring charge of power tiller at Rs 500 per acre, pesticides and seed sprayers at 50 per cent.
To improve the economic condition of marginal farmers living in difficult terrain, fertilizer subsidy would be provided for urea at Rs 250 per metric tonne.
