Maize production likely to go up by 10%, says industry
Maize production in the country is likely to rise by 10 per cent to about 15 million tons this year on the back of increased area under cultivation, an industry body said.

NEW DELHI: Maize production in the country is likely to rise by 10 per cent to about 15 million tons this year on the back of increased area under cultivation, an industry body said.
"The corn output is likely to increase by 10 per cent in 2007," All India Starch Manufacturers Association President Amol Sheth told media.
He said the production is estimated to go up because of favourable weather that has resulted into higher acreage.
According to industry estimates, maize production was 13.5 million tons last year, Sheth said. Interestingly, the government has pegged the output at 14.98 million tons in its fourth advance estimate.
Sheth said the crop was damaged by flood in many of the growing regions last year.
According to Agriculture Ministry, the area under maize acreage stood at 73.52 lakh hectare till last week against 69.2 lakh hectare in the year-ago period.
Industry experts have also attributed the increase in area under cultivation for the crop to higher realisation at the hands of farmers.
India is facing a major shortfall because of a rise in demand for the coarse cereal from poultry farmers, starch manufacturers, food processors and others.
According to an estimate, 60 per cent of the output is used as poultry and cattle feed, while 12 per cent is used by the starch industry.
Nearly 22 per cent of maize produced in the country is being used for human consumption, which is growing every year due to changing food habits.
