THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI(M) led LDF government in Kerala today approved an accident insurance scheme for farmers in the state, called the 'Kisan Sree Insurance'.
Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister V S Achutanandan said that the cabinet sanctioned the scheme recommended by the Agriculture department and that the details would soon be worked out.
The scheme was in the eye of a storm last week when the Finance Department objected to the premium amount of Rs 20 quoted in the proposal and also the lack of guidelines to identify 'farmers' to be included in the scheme.
The issue also resulted in an open debate in the assembly over the scheme between agriculture Minister and CPI nominee Mullakara Ratanakaran and Finance Minister T M Thomas Issac of CPI-M.
State CPI secretary Velliyam Bharghavan also came out openly in support of the scheme and stated that "party considerations should not come in the way of clearing welfare schemes".
