Kharif oilseed production likely to rise 20% in FY-08
Kharif oilseed production is expected to go up by around 20 per cent to 16.1 million tonnes in the ongoing financial year as against the estimated 13.4 million tonnes last fiscal.
Kharif sesame is the only oilseed showing negative production, a research report on Oils and Oilseeds prepared by the Knowledge Management Team of National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) said here.
Area under soybean cultivation this kharif is around 17.6 million hectares as of mid-Oct, which is almost 7 per cent higher than the area sown during last kharif season, NCDEX's Economist Shilpa Jain said in Kharif 2007 Report.
Except for sunflower and sesame, all Kharif oilseeds have registered a growth in acreage this year.
"Since 70 per cent of sunflower produce in India is during the Rabi season, we concentrate on the four main kharif crops--groundnut, (85 per cent kharif production), soybean, sesame and castor," Jain said.
Groundnut acreage in Maharashtra declined this year, while it rose substantially in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Similarly, soybean acreage in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra increased substantially while sesame acreage fell sharply in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, Jain said.
Castor acreage shot up in Gujarat, while it fell in Rajasthan.
Overall, the highest percentage increase in oilseed acreage is seen in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
