Kashmir valley is all set to achieve bumper vegetable crop of nine lakh metric tonnes this season on account of timely rainfall and introduction of hybrid varieties.

SRINAGAR: Kashmir valley is all set to achieve bumper vegetable crop of nine lakh metric tonnes this season on account of timely rainfall and introduction of hybrid varieties, agriculture experts believe.
The vegetable crop this season is likely to touch nine lakh metric tonnes as against last year's yield of six lakh tonnes, Director Agriculture Manzoor Ahmed Shah said today.
He said the possibility has increased hopes for a better income for the vegetable farmers as the valley, which generally does a business of around Rs 125 crore a year in vegetables, can now aspire for more income.
Timely rainfall and introduction of hybrid varieties by the Agriculture Department holds credit for a high possibility of a good harvest, Shah said.
He said the hybrid seeds guarantee a double and sometime triple the normal harvest in a season. These seeds were distributed through field extension centres of the Agriculture Department at some villages.
He said vegetables like potato, onion, carrot, cauliflower, cabbage and green chilly are flourishing and the farmers are happy about the produce.
The state government constructed four sub-stations to make sure that enough water supply is available to the farmers for achieving bumper yield of vegetables.
Apart from this, the Department of Agriculture has facilitated tractors to the farmers through easy instalment schemes for making farmers achieve better prospects in farming.
