Israel looking to invest in India's agriculture sector

Israel is keen on making investments in India's dairy, horticulture and irrigation sectors as part of a bilateral agreement that was signed two years ago for cooperation in agriculture.

NEW DELHI: Israel is keen on making investments in India's dairy, horticulture and irrigation sectors as part of a bilateral agreement that was signed two years ago for cooperation in agriculture.

"We are highly interested to co-operate in areas such as dairy, horticulture, water and irrigation sectors in India," Israel's Agriculture Minister Shalom Simhon said in an interaction with FICCI officials.

Israel would like to co-operate with India in water resources, especially recycling water for agricultural purpose and irrigation. The vising Minister said his country had expertise in livestocks feed, dairy equipment and technology and was looking to work together to tap the opportunities in the sector here.

He mentioned Israel's biggest dairy company TNUVA had shown keen interest to invest in India.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Minister would discuss these issues with his Indian counterpart Sharad Pawar tomorrow. "We wish to take forward the pact on agricultural co-operation signed between two countries two years back." The two nations had inked a deal for co-operation in agriculture in May 2006.

While in horticulture, the Minister said, "Israeli team has already discussed with the Rajasthan government for planting olive oil trees and dates in the state".

Besides, the Jewish country is also willing to share expertise in intensifying agricultural produce under protected green-house conditions, horticulture, R&D, post-harvest technology, he said.

The bilateral trade between the two countries rose to $24,01.12 million in 2006-07 against $22,32.69 million in the previous year.
