India to play a major role in global food business:Sahai
India would play a major role in global food trade given its strong base in agriculture, Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Subodh Kant Sahai said.
"India has a major role in the future of global food business as it has a strong base in agriculture and provides a large and varied raw material base for food processing industry," he was quoted as saying in an official release.
Sahai was speaking at the opening of Indian pavilion at the Anuga food fair in Cologne, Germany. The Anuga fair, which is considered world's largest exhibition on food sector, was held during October 13-17.
"It is a country of over 1.10 billion consumers and there is a largely untapped domestic market of 1000 million consumers in the food processing sector and two hundred million more consumers are expected to shift to processed food by 2010," he said highlighting the potential in the sector.
There were many areas for investment in this sector which include mega food parks, agri-infrastructure, supply chain aggregation, logistics and cold chain infrastructure, it said. He said the government was giving priority to the food processing sector.
