India to commence cage fish farming in offshore waters

India is all set to promote cage farming which will enable the country to produce marine fin fish on a large scale in offshore waters.

KOCHI: India is all set to promote cage farming which will enable the country to produce marine fin fish on a large scale in offshore waters.

The Marine Products Development Authority (MPEDA) has signed an MOU with Innovation Norway, a Norwegian agency, to this effect, MPEDA Chairman G Mohan kumar said.

"MPEDA's vision is to make India a world leader in cage farming within the next 10 years," he said.

The Norwegian company would assist MPEDA in setting up three pilot projects at Ratnagiri in Maharastra, Kannur in Kerala and in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The islands had been found to have tremendous potential for cage farming and it is likely to become a major centre for production of fin fish in future, he said.

The project would also look for commercial development of cage farming, value addtion and health management.

"India is the second largest producer of shrimp in the world, accounting for about 2.5 million tons annually. China, which tops the list, produces about 40 million tonnes. India needs to diversify like Norway, Vietnam and Thailand to make it big," he said.

The Sea Food Exporters Association of India President A J Tharakan said the Indian coastal waters were getting Overfished. Cage farming would give an alternate source of income to fishermen during the monsoon months when fishing is banned.

The Norwegian experts would survey the area in the next one year and see the possiblity of putting up cages, Mohan Kumar said. The collaboration is for a 10 year period.
