India is an important aquaculture country: Pawar

Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, said the targeted four per cent growth rate in agriculture could be achieved only if the fisheries and animal husbandry sectors recorded a growth of six per cent.

HYDERABAD: Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, said the targeted four per cent growth rate in agriculture could be achieved only if the fisheries and animal husbandry sectors recorded a growth of six per cent.

While there was a potential for 12 million tonnes of fish production in the country, the government has targeted to achieve a modest production level of 10 million tonnes by the end of the current Five Year Plan period, the Pawar said, while inaugurating the first three-day Indian Fish Festival-2009 on the Necklace Road here today.

Fisheries sector is being targeted as an important area for national development. India is not only a maritime country but also an important aquaculture country in the world and the contribution of Indian fish to the food basket of the world has been substantial.

The current annual growth rate of over four per cent in fisheries is indicative of the immense opportunity in the coming years, Pawar said.

Apart from targeting exports, Union Government would like to improve domestic consumption of fish by educating people on its nutritional and medicinal values, Pawar said.

Referring to the growing market for ornamental fish, the Union Minister said the current business worldwide was to the tune of $325.
