ICAR signs MOU with SKF for research, seed development
Indian Council for Agricultural Research has signed an MoU with Sipani Agricultural (Krishi) Research Farm, a Mandsaur-based private company for research and seed development purposes in this field.
Under the agreement, SKF would provide its expert services for improvement of crops of Arhar pulses, soyabean, maize and wheat, an official release said here, adding that the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) would be implemented from this season itself.
Speaking on the occasion ICAR Genetics Department head K V Prabhu said that during the last 15 years SKF has developed very durable and profitable varieties of seeds.
SKF's Managing director Narendra Singh Sipani said that his firm has been granted permission by agriculture departments of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra to supply hybrid seeds of soyabean, Arhar, wheat, maize and cotton.
Sipani, an agriculture graduate from Madhya Pradesh has been connected with agricultural research work for the last 30 years.
Joint Director Research K R Kondal has termed the agreement as an important step towards India's agricultural development.
Chief Scientist of Genetics Department S S Singh said that high quality seeds have been developed by Sipani Agricultural Research Farm which require minimum irrigation besides having the capacity to withstand adverse weather conditions.
Through further research by ICAR, these seeds would be made disease-resistant after which the jointly produced seeds would be supplied directly to farmers, he said.
He informed that the genes of seeds of ICAR would be infused in those of SKF and vice versa which would ensure fortification of seeds of both the institutions.
