ICAR sanctions CIFT project of Rs 9 cr

The Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) has been sanctioned the prestigious National Agricultural Innovation Project of the ICAR with an outlay of Rs 9.71 crore.

KOCHI: The Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) has been sanctioned the prestigious National Agricultural Innovation Project of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research with an outlay of Rs 9.71 crore.

The project 'Responsible Harvesting and Utilisation of Selected Small Pelagics and Freshwater Fishes' will be formally launched on February 4, a CIFT press release said.

This is the first to be sanctioned under the component 'Production to Consumption System' and encompasses the entire spectrum of stakeholders and activities from production to consumption.

The duration of the project is four and half years and is scheduled to end in June 2012.

The project is unique in its concept of consortium mode of implementation with cooperative societies, NGOs and private entrepreneurs as partners.

The consortium will be led by CIFT and will have the Chellanam-Kandakadavu Fishermen Welfare Development, Cooperative Society, Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation (KFDC), Chellanam Pancyat SC/ST Cooperative Society Ltd, Britto Exports, Chennai as partners.

The project aims at demonstrating a business model for the responsible production, utilisation and marketing of small pelagics and freshwater fishes, CIFT Director Dr K Devadasan said.
