HDFC ERGO GIC to implement pilot crop insurance in West Bengal

HDFC ERGO GIC Ltd has been allowed by the West Bengal government to implement pilot Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme (WBCIS) in 2011.

KOLKATA: HDFC ERGO GIC Ltd, one of the leading general insurance companies, has been allowed by the West Bengal government to implement pilot Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme ( WBCIS) for non loanee farmers in Bankura, Burdwan, East Midnapur, West Midnapur, Hooghy, Howrah, Nadia and South 24 Pargana districts of West Bengal for kharif crop in 2011.

Crop covered under the scheme is Aman Paddy. Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme offers insurance cover against losses of farmers due to aberrant weather conditions during the crop cycle. Claim amounts will be settled on the basis of data taken from reference weather stations mentioned in the scheme and managed by independent third party organization.
The scheme comes at a time when the farmers have just started sowing of the paddy crop after two weeks of good monsoon. The farmers are now preparing seedling for paddy crop which will be finally transplanted in the paddy cultivation fields.
