CHANDIGARH: Haryana government would launch a statewide campaign for seed treatment before sowing crops during Kharif, 2008.

While stating this today, Haryana Agriculture Minister, Harmohinder Singh Chatha that the campaign would start from May 10, which would go on till May 25 and hundred per cent seed treatment would be achieved.

Singh said that seed treatment involves very little cost but provides safeguard against many diseases, which were of economic importance to the farmers. "Seed treatment was necessary to protect seed and seedlings from pests and pathogens in early stages of germination and establishment," he said.

Realizing the contribution of seed treatment in the improvement of crop yield the State Government decided to launch a campaign to make the farmers aware about the benefits of seed treatment and ensure that 100 per cent seeds of kharif crops should be treated before sowing.

He said that paddy, bajra, cotton, sugarcane and kharif pulses were the major crops, which generally occupy about 25 lakh hectare area in the state.
