NEW DELHI: Looking to achieve the ambitious floriculture export target of Rs 1,000 crore by 2010, the government is working on ways to revive 19 major sick flower units that owe Rs 147 crore to banks, financial institutions and the National Horticulture Board.
The government is also considering the recommendations of consultants, A.F Ferguson and Co, which favoured creation of a 'Special Floriculture Industry Fund' worth Rs 20.4 crore to assist sick units in settling their outstanding loans on a one-time settlement basis.
Commerce Minister Kamal Nath asked a delegation of the floriculture industry representatives to submit in detail, their expectations of the package when they called on him here on November 22, sources said.
The delegation comprised members of South India Floriculture Association and Western India Floriculture Association and included the representatives of sick units.
The floriculture industry associations are in the process of drafting a joint memorandum on behalf of flower exporters of southern and western region.
The rehabilitation package is likely to be based on the recommendations of the A F Ferguson report on "rehabilitation of sick floriculture units" that was submitted to the government in April 2006, a member of the delegation said.
