In a relief to debt-ridden farmers of Wayanad district, Kerala's LDF Government on Wednesday announced the take over of loans of upto Rs 25,000 lent by Co-operative banks.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a relief to debt-ridden farmers of Wayanad district, Kerala's LDF Government on Wednesday announced the take over of loans of upto Rs 25,000 lent by Co-operative banks.

The concession would be available on loans taken upto June 2006 by small-holders owning upto one acres of land, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said during his weekly cabinet briefing.

The relief measure would entail a commitment of Rs 60 crore to the exchequer.

The decision was taken on the basis of recommendations of the State Debt Relief Commission which considered the case of Wayanad on a priority basis.

The Commission was expected to come out with its reports on other distressed areas like Palakkad and Kuttanad soon for the government to act upon, the Chief Minister said.

The upland Wayanad had been witness to a large number of farmers' suicides over the years.
