Govt allocates 3 LT wheat more to meet festival demand

An ad-hoc festival allocation of about one lakh tonne of wheat (for October) has been made by the Centre to all the states and Union territories.

NEW DELHI: The government on Friday announced additional allocation of about three lakh tonne of wheat during October-December for people above poverty line covered under public distribution system, a move aimed at keeping the prices of the foodgrain under check.

"An ad-hoc festival allocation of about one lakh tonne of wheat (for October) has been made by the Centre to all the states and Union territories," an official release said.

The Centre also decided to release additional 98,000 tonne of wheat each during next two months, it said.

"This will help in cooling down the prices of wheat and wheat products," a government official said.

The Centre has asked state governments to keep a strict vigil to ensure that no diversion of foodgrain takes place and the allocated wheat gets distributed as per the procedure under PDS.
