The famous Goan Fenny, Assam tea and Lucknow chikan embroidery may soon join the league of 97 other Indian products which enjoy geographical protection from global patenting.

NEW DELHI: The famous Goan Fenny, Assam tea and Lucknow chikan embroidery may soon join the league of 97 other Indian products which enjoy geographical protection from global patenting.

"The process of registering the Goan Fenny, Assam tea and Chikan embroidery of Lucknow as Geographical Indications (GIs) is in the final stage and registration certifications will be issued soon," an official said.

There are about 1,000 other products that are in the pipeline to be registered as a GI, he said.

At present, about 97 Indian products such as Darjeeling tea, Chanderi saree, Kancheepuram silk, Mysore agarbathi and sandalwood oil, Salem fabric and Kangra tea have been registered with the GI Registry.

Fenny, originating in Goa, is liquor made from coconut or juice of cashew apple. A GI is a sign used on goods that have specific geographic origin and possess unique qualities by virtue of being native to that place.

In the past, India has won cases where some of the GI products were patented in the US and other markets. PTI
