Free saplings at Delhi mango festival a big hit

Farmers from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh too come together to display traditional, hybrid and unique varieties of mangoes. More than 20,000 visit the festival and everyone stocks up on their favourite variety.

Summers and mangoes go hand in hand and the mango festival is a great way to make Delhi’s sweltering summers lusciously endurable. In its 31st year, Delhi’s most awaited mango festival organized by Delhi Tourism in association with the Government of Delhi will begin from July 5-7 at Dilli Haat, Janakpuri.

“The enthusiasm of people towards the exhibition as well as the competitions showcase their love for the king of fruits. The festival is among the most awaited cultural events of Delhi, drawing thousands of visitors every year,” said Sudhir Sobti, chief manager- public relations, Delhi Tourism.

Over 500 varieties of mangoes, will be on display at the event which will include Langra, Chausa, Amrapali, Rataul, Hussainara, Ramkela, Kesar, Fazri and Mallika.

The exhibition at the festival also offers sale of processed mango items including products like pickles, jam, chutney, mango pulp, mango juice, jelly, aam papad and aam panna. There are also professional to guide consumers on how to ripen the fruit in a natural way or even how to plant mango trees.

“Free mango saplings to the people visiting the festival is a big hit,” he said. Shakeel Parvez, a mango grower from Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh said that consumers can buy crates of mango which usually have 10-12 kg of the fruit and ripen it at home. “At home you can use paper or cotton cloth to cover the mango and let it ripen naturally. It’s a natural way and healthy,” he said.
