Four AP sugar mills agree to clear Rs 32 cr arrears to farmers
Four private sugar mills in Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh today agreed to clear arrears to the tune of Rs 32.50 crore to cane farmers.
The agreement was reached during the talks the State Sugar Minister J Geeta Reddy had with the representatives of sugar mills here.
Talking to reporters, the Minister said the mills promised to first clear the payment of the Statutory Minimum Price in the current month and later provide other incentives, including fertilisers, to the cane growers.
The government, she said, would not hesitate to invoke provisions of the Revenue Recovery Act if the mills failed to honour their commitment within the stipulated time.
The problem arose due to glut in the international market following bumper crop in Brazil. The demand was likely to improve this year, the Minister said.
The representatives of Nizam Deccan Sugar Ltd, Ganapati Sugar, Gayatri Sugars and Trident Sugar participated in the talks.
Stating that modernisation of four cooperative sugar mills was delayed due to cost escalation, Reddy said she would shortly meet Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to seek Rs 294 crore for upgradation.
