Flour millers say ban on exports won't help

The flour millers today criticized the government decision to ban wheat flour exports, saying it would hardly have any impact on flour prices as the quantity of exports was low.

NEW DELHI: The flour millers today criticized the government decision to ban wheat flour exports, saying it would hardly have any impact on flour prices as the quantity of exports was low.

"The move (to ban wheat flour export) is not going to impact much as the export quantity was not worth mentioning," Roller Flour Millers Federation of India Secretary Veena Sharma told the media.

The government yesterday extended the ban on wheat exports to an indefinite period and also banned the exports of wheat flour.

Sharma said the wheat flour export was about 5,000 tonne, mainly to the Gulf countries and Indonesia.

Traders said maida prices would definitely go up despite the ban as wheat prices have increased following the announcement of Rs 1,000 as minimum support price.

However, Sharma said the prices on maida would not go up as much as the corresponding increase in wheat prices as many flour millers have long term commitments with food product manufacturers.
