FCI procures just 1.1% of paddy in Punjab
The Food Corporation of India (FCI) may be betting on the Rs 50 bonus announced by the Union Cabinet on paddy to accelerate procurement in Punjab which so far in the kharif season has been painstakingly slow.
As per the data provided by state government today, of the total 36.26 lakh mt procurement by government-owned agencies till October 12, FCI has lifted just 40,803 metric tonne.
The government agencies and private millers together have collected over 48.74 lakh metric tonne from the state so far.
Out of total procurement of 48,74,142 tonne of paddy in the state, the government agencies have procured 36,26,416 tonne (74.4 per cent) whereas millers have lifted 12,47,726 tonne (25.6 per cent).
State-owned agencies PUNGRAIN procured 8,37,708 tonnes (23.1 per cent), MARKFED procured 8,32,343 tonne (23 per cent), PUNSUP procured 9,62,038 tonne (26.5 per cent) , PSWC procured 5,36,508 tonne (14.8 per cent) and PAIC lifted 4,17,016 tonne (11.5 per cent) of paddy.
A government release said Ferozepur district with 9,32,084 tonnes of procurement was leading in procurement operations whereas Ludhiana with 4,69,357 tonnes is second.
The farmers of Punjab have been paid Rs 1,631.22 crore for the paddy procured by the government agencies alone up to October 11, he said.
A sum of Rs 2,130.13 crores have already been allocated to different Districts Food Controllers to ensure timely payment to the farmers.
To ensure smooth procurement and timely payments to farmers during kharif season 2007-08, the state government has already got a cash credit limit of Rs 7,439 crore sanctioned from the Reserve Bank of India for the month of October,2007.
