Farmers to launch agitation in Tamil Nadu

Farmers' associations will launch a week-long agitation from December 18 to highlight the "crisis" faced by them in Tamil Nadu.

MADURAI: Farmers' associations will launch a week-long agitation from December 18 to highlight the "crisis" faced by them in Tamil Nadu.

Protests would be held during the "demands week" to be observed from December 18 to 24, Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association president K Balakrishnan and Sugarcane Farmers Association state president N Palanisamy said.

Their demands include fair price for paddy and sugarcane, uninterrupted power and adequate supply of fertilisers.

"The Central government should announce Rs 1,000 as fair price for a quintal of paddy and Rs 1,500 for one tonne of sugarcane," Palanisamy said.

Tamil Nadu was facing an acute shortage of fertilisers and the state government should take adequate steps to gap the shortfall, they said.

Balakrishnan said the area under cultivation has drastically reduced and the agriculture sector's share in the state's GDP has also come down.

The production cost of agricultural produce has increased despite the fall in prices, he said.

The production of almost all crops has come down and rural farm workers were migrating to the cities, they said, adding the government should set up an expert committee to study the sector in detail.
