Farmers of West Bengal, Chhatisgarh, Uttarakhand adopt Ambuja Cement Foundation's SRI method of farming

KOLKATA:As a part of its endeavor in reaching out to farmers through agro-based livelihood initiatives, Ambuja Cement Foundation's (ACF's) systematic Rice Intensification (SRI) method of farming is increasingly being adopted by farmers in the three states of West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand as a low-input, high-yield method of paddy farming. At present 3,500 acres under SRI cultivation in these three states.

SRI is a sustainable farming method that consumes less water and seeds, and uses bio-fertilizers and pesticides instead of chemicals, in a bid to minimize costs and increase the quality and quantity of yield to support small and marginal farmers.

Farmers are encouraged and trained to practice the SRI method through demonstrations. ACF develops demonstration plots for crops on a trial basis, so farmers gain awareness of the benefits without any commitment.

The SRI method has so far been implemented in the states of Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal and has received very encouraging response from farmers. The average recorded increase in yield is 40% and the maximum increase in yield is 107%. The cost of cultivation has reduced by 11%.

This has also enhanced the food security of the farmers from 15 months to 21 months per average land holding of 0.45 hectares and reduced usage of water for agriculture especially in summer.
