Farmers lose Rs 100 crore in Kottayam

Kerala Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran on Saturday said the losses suffered by farmers due to the summer rains in the district were estimated at Rs 100 crore.

KOTTAYAM: Kerala Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran on Saturday said the losses suffered by farmers due to the summer rains in the district were estimated at Rs 100 crore.

Speaking to reporters after visiting several paddy fields, he said Civil Supplies Corporation would procure all types of paddy that suffered minor damage. 'Some of the paddy thus procured cannot be used', he said. However, it could be used to make cattle feed, he said.

He asked the department officials to assess the loss and inform the estimated loss before tomorrow evening.

The government would need more funds from the Centre to solve the sudden crisis in agriculte sector. The Minister also assured that he will demand to send a central team to the affected areas in the state.
