FAO to support agriculture
The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations has assured India that it will provide every possible assistance for upliftment of farmers in the country.
Food Processing Minister Subodh Kant Sahai and FAO Director General Jacques Diouf met and discussed farm production in India, value addition and inadequate post- harvest management, an official release said on Friday.
Sahai said since one of the mandates of FAO is ensuring high quality food and healthy lives, his ministry would need FAO support in achieving the goal for improving the condition of farmers.
Diouf assured that all assistance will be provided from FAO for upliftment of farmers, the release said.
FAO was working for achieving food security for all and higher quality of food to lead active, healthy lives, Diouf said, adding it provides assistance in various ways for higher yield of crops, improving technical skills and legal advice on land ownership matters.
Food Processing Secretary P I Suvrathan said: "FAO has been associated with the activities of improvement of hygiene, quality and safety of food products. The Ministry needs assistance from FAO for upgrading the quality of food".
Suvrathan said FAO might also consider help in establishing Organic Processing Zones in India.
