HAZARIBAGH: Twenty farmers, now being imparted scientific training to increase production of fish, will get 20 check dams to rear fish, a DVC official said today.

"The farmers are currently receiving scientific training to increase production of variety of fishes like Rohu, Katla, mirror carp other species which will increase income of those engaged in fish farming," Sanjay Kumar Singh, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the DVC Officers forum, said here.

Stating that Damodar Valley Corporation has constructed 700 check dams in its command area of the Damodar basin, he said 20 check dams, where water will be available through the year, were selected to hand over to these farmers for pisciculture.

The DVC, which had virtually closed all its fishery projects since 1987 due to various reasons including Maoist menace, has started this project this year at the initiative of its Chairman R N Sen, he added.

The project would kick off in Hazaribagh, Koderma, Dhanbad, Giridih, Jamtara, Bokaro, Ramgarh districts of Jharkhand and Purulia in West Bengal, he added.

The Chairman has called upon all DVC officials and workers that the DVC is known as the power giant and it must take initiative in developing fisheries and forestry, he said, adding funds have been released for pisciculture to make people self-employed.
