Damage due to rain in Tuticorin district estimated at Rs 123 crore

Rain-hit people have been housed in six camps. District Collector Ravikumar said in view of more rains forecast, 58 camps have been kept ready.

TUTICORIN: The damage due to rains in this port district has been estimated at Rs.123 crore, District Collector Ravikumar said today.

In a release, he said 651 huts have been damaged and relief to the tune of Rs.18.19 lakh given to 414 hut-dwellers.

Rain-hit people have been housed in six camps.He said in view of more rains forecast, 58 camps have been kept ready.

Special camps would be conducted at the Village Administrative office building for providing education certificates and ration cards lost during the rains.

In the rains, computers and furniture to the tune of Rs.3.99 crore had been damaged in the collector office complex where Superintendent of Police office was also located. The damage in other areas has been estimated at Rs.119 crore.

Eighteen teams headed by doctors have been formed to visit the rain affected areas and prevent spread of any infection.
