CPRI develops two high-yieling varieties of potatoes

Of the two varieties one Kufri Sadabahar is suitable for the climates of UP, while the other Kufri Himsona can survive in the hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh, J&K and other northeastern states.

SHIMLA: Shimla-based Central Potato Research Institute has developed two high-yielding varieties of potatoes, a senior CPRI official said on Sunday.

Of the two varieties one Kufri Sadabahar is suitable for the climates of Uttar Pradesh, while the other Kufri Himsona can survive in the hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and other northeastern states.

After days of experiment in the laboratory at Kufri in the outskirts of Shimla district, a rich variety of potato named 'Kufri Sadabahar' has been developed which is suitable for climate of the Uttar Pradesh, CPRI's Principal Scientist N K Pandey told reporters.

The field testing of Kufri Sadabahar, which is a medium maturing, main season and high-yielding product, has been completed successfully, he added.

The seeds of this potato variety would be made available to the farmers soon, he added.

Another rich variety of potato 'Kufri Himsona' has been developed which is suitable to climate of hills of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and parts of northeastern states, the Principal Scientist said.

The variety, capable of surviving harsh climates of the hilly regions, would require 120-140 days of maturing, Pandey added.
