Centre would take decision on MIS soon: Pawar

Sharad Pawar assures Karnataka that the Centre would take a decision in a week's time on Market Intervention Scheme to help onion growers following the crash in the commodity's prices.

BANGALORE: Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Tuesday assured Karnataka that the Centre would take a decision in a week's time on operationalising the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) to help onion growers following the crash in the commodity's prices.

National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India LTD (NAFED) would be ready to intervene in the market to help stabilise the prices of perishables whenever the state government felt it necessary, he said, responding to the state's request for MIS in respect of turdal, copra and onion, whose pricess have been falling.

Pawar, who held a meeting with Governor Rameshwar Thakur and agriculture, cooperation, food and public distribution officials here, said several measures have been taken to mitigate the sufferings by sugarcane growers.

The state requested that Rs 100 crore be released for the "Yashasvini health insurance scheme" to enable it to extend it to agricultural labourers and to set up a revolving fund for the MIS scheme jointly by the state and Centre.

Pawar said Karnataka's proposal to include the rice growing districts of Mysore, Mandya, Davanagere, Koppal and Belalry under National Food Security Mission will be considered.

The meeting also discussed the Prime Minister's package for the suicide-prone districts of the state, a release from Raj Bhavan said here.
