Centre urged to ensure 100% use of jute in foodgrain packaging

The West Bengal government urged the Centre to ensure that the reservation percentage of jute for packaging of foodgrains and sugar is maintained at 100 per cent for 2008-09.

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government on Friday urged the Centre to ensure that the reservation percentage of jute for packaging of foodgrains and sugar is maintained at 100 per cent for 2008-09 (July to June) and to continue it for the next five years.

In a letter to the Union Textile Minister Shankersinh Vaghela, state's Commerce and Industry Minister Nirupam Sen said that there were over 40 lakh farmers and 2.5 lakh direct and indirect workers in the jute mills in the organised sector.

"I will like to take the opportunity to reiterate the importance the state government has been consistently placing on the jute industry for overall economic development of West Bengal," he said.

The Packaging Materials (Compulsory use in Packaging Commodities) Act, 1987, was enacted in the Parliament to protect the jute industry.

Accordingly, the Centre from time to time has been deciding upon the percentage of jute products that would have to be used compulsorily for packaging under the Act, Sen said, adding that the orders under the Act specify 100 per cent packaging for foodgrains and sugar only.
