Centre of Excellence for Tropical Fruits at Dabwali brightens farmers prospect

The Centre of Excellence for Tropical Fruits being set up with the help of Israel at village Mangeana in Dabwali, district Sirsa has brightened the prospects of the farmers engaged in horticultural activities of this area.

NEW DELHI: The Centre of Excellence for Tropical Fruits being set up with the help of Israel at village Mangeana in Dabwali, district Sirsa has brightened the prospects of the farmers engaged in horticultural activities of this area. Once a desert land, now this area is becoming full of greenery with the setting up of this Centre of Excellence.

An official spokesman said that farmers of Haryana and adjoining areas of Rajasthan and Punjab have started planting the plants of lemon, olives, pomegranate, date palm and guava. Various varieties of fruits would be cultivated here at a very low cultivation cost which would lead to all round development of horticulture in the State.

He said that the efforts of the state government to encourage the farmers to adopt crop diversification have started yielding positive results. Orchards were being developed over an area of 17,500 acres in Sirsa. Farmers of Punjab, Rajasthan and other adjoining areas have started developing orchards after gaining know-how from this centre, he added.

The Indo-Israel project started on June 11, 2009 and so far Rs 9.70 crore has been spent on this. The project at village Mangeanahas been set up over an area of 31 hectares. About 50 to 60 farmers have been visiting the centre everyday to get themselves acquainted with new information on planting fruit trees.
