NEW DELHI: Basmati rice enjoys a premium place in global markets because of its unique aroma and taste. But, several countries are creating market barriers denying their consumers taste and fragrance of the Indian rice.

"Basmati is a premium product and there is no doubt that in some markets it is being singled out quite precisely because there is a market for it...," Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar said while inaugurating an 'International Chef Conference' here.

While Khullar did not specify the markets where the Indian Basmati rice is facing the barriers like high tariff and stringent sanitary and phyto-sanitary (SPS) standards, trade officials pointed out the problem lies in Europe and China.

According to Vijay Setia, President of the All India Rice Exporters Association, the Indian Basmati rice faces duty barriers in the European Union countries. In China, there is an issue of pesticide residual.

"Government can help with that", Setia said, addressing a two-day culinary extravaganza, organised by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority of India (APEDA).

The event is being organised to promoted Indian Basmati rice making it popular with chefs from the US,Mexico, Italy, France and Moscow. Food writers from these countries have also come for the conference.

Khullar said trade in agricultural commodities globally has become difficult, as several nations are resorting to protectionism.

"Because of that, standards (like SPS)...pesticide residues are coming about as a criteria for blocking market access," he pointed out.
