Banana prod to touch 25 MT by 2020
Banana production in India to touch 25 million tonne by 2020 from the current 19.4 million tonne a year.

TIRUCHIRAPALLI: Banana production in India would be increased to 25 million tonne by 2020 from the current 19.4 million tonne every year, a senior official of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) said on Tuesday.
The figure was based on a vision document by the National Research Centre of Banana (NRCB), ICAR Deputy Director General (Horticulture) H P Singh told reporters here.
Singh said efforts to increase the national productivity average from 34.5 tonnes per hectare to 50 tonnes per hectare would itself clinch the target.
The National Horticulture Mission, launched at an outlay of Rs 2,300 crore in 2006 would cover the initiative, he added.
All the 12 research centres of horticulture crops would be given more infrastructure, additional faculty and researchers and delegated more powers like opting for collaborative research projects, focusing on regionally differential studies and networking of the units, he said.
There is also a plan to create an independent directorate for horticulture as the discipline was already gaining momentum in production and commercial activities, he added.
Singh urged farmers to adopt modern technology for post harvest exercises as more than 25 per cent of Banana produced in the country get waste due to poor inefficient storage.
India is now the largest Banana producing nation in the world with a total acreage of 0.565 million hectares, shared by six prominent states. Tamil Nadu has the largest area under cover followed by Maharashtra.
Singh was in the city in connection with a National conference on Banana.
