APK ask govt tto reduce lease rental on plantations
The Association of Planters of Kerala (APK) has asked the government to support the recession-hit plantation sector by reducing the lease rental on plantations.
The state budget has, in the current year, proposed a sharp increase in the lease rental for plantations from an average rate of Rs 10 to 20 per acre to Rs 1300 per acre per year.
APK, has in a statement, pointed out that plantation sector is facing a fall in commodity prices. The rubber prices have fallen by almost 52 % from the September 2008 level of Rs 135 per kg. The tyre industry, which consumes 60 % of the rubber produced, has cut production by 15 to 25 %. The plantation sector is in a state of disarray.
The lease rental hike has come in this context, APK statement said. The Government is remaining blind to the issues and is not offering a helping hand to the sector, the APK spokesmen said.
