Andhra to launch comprehensive crop insurance scheme

The Andhra Pradesh government will soon launch a comprehensive crop insurance scheme for benefit of farmers.

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government will soon launch a comprehensive crop insurance scheme for benefit of farmers.
"After a pilot project in Anantapur, Kadapa, Karimnagar, Mahaboobnagar and Prakasam district, which benefited 2.81 lakh farmers to the tune of Rs 292 crore, our government is now looking for extending the crop insurance scheme in the entire state," Minister for Agriculture N Raghuveera Reddy told reporters here on Friday.
Releasing a 'fact sheet' on the three-year performance of the Congress government in agriculture sector, the minister also outlined the future plans in horticulture and sericulture besides farm segment.
He said creation of a pool of agri-scientists was one of the pro-farmer measures undertaken by the Y S Rajshekhar Reddy government. Besides training the farmers under the skill enhancement project 'Poolam Badi', the government established soil testing and vermi compost centres, he said.
The government is now selecting a group of farmers below 40 years of age with minimum qualification of SSC and confer them with title of 'Adarsha Rythulu' (ideal farmers) to facilitate healthy farm practices, he said.
"Nearly 25,000 such farmers had been chosen and an equal number of them would be appointed soon to help others," he said. An agriculture technology mission has also been formed for comprehensive rural development, he added.
