Agriculture sector binds India-Argentina partnership

Argentine Ambassador to India Mariano Caucino on Wednesday stated that the bilateral link between the two countries is destined to continue expanding in key economic fields.

“Agriculture is one of the cores of economic cooperation between India and Argentina. As you know, Argentina is India’s number one provider of edible oils”, the envoy explained speaking at GLOBOIL summit in Mumbai.

“Economic Relationship has reached 6,5 US billion dollars in 2025” the ambassador said while he emphazised that “India has become our sixth largest partner”.


On Argentina’s record supply of edible oils to India, Caucino said Argentina is contributing to India’s food security.

The Argentine ambassador stated “this relationship has evolved fundamentally in the last seven or eight years since those shared values were accompanied by a convergence of our national interests”. “This is fundamentally based on the grounds of our strong economic complementarity”, Caucino said.

The Argentine ambassador argued that “each time that I come to Mumbai I am able to witness the new India’s remarkable success”.

Caucino stated that “since 2019, when Argentina and India elevated their bilareral relationship to the rank of Strategic Partnership, economic relations between both countries Expanded to more than 6 billion US dollars”.

“As you know, Argentine agribusiness is one of the country's most strategic sectors. Argentina is a global leader in exports of soybean and sunflower oils and by-products. It boasts one of the world's most prominent oilseed crushing industries”, the ambassador stated.

In the 2025-26 crop year, Argentina’s soybean production reached 49.7 million metric tons and sunflower seed production hit 7.4 million metric tons—the latter representing an all-time record.

“This investment process and industrial development are accompanied by this Administration's firm decision to gradually and permanently reduce the tax burden on exports”, he affirmed.

“India is a prime example of Argentina’s international integration. It is one of the main markets for our vegetable oils: in 2025, it was the primary destination for Argentine soybean oil, with exports reaching USD 3.712 billion, as well as the leading destination for the sunflower complex, totaling USD 788 million”.

“At the same time, India is the world's top importer of vegetable oils and maintains strong demand: in August, it imported 1.57 million metric tons of edible oils, setting a record with 628,736 metric tons of soybean oil. In this context, India has just lowered its import tariffs, bringing the basic tariff for crude sunflower oil down to zero and also reducing tariffs on soybean and palm oils”, the ambassador remarked.

In a global vegetable oil market with firm demand, this combination—an Argentina expanding its production, processing, and export capacity, alongside an India reducing trade barriers—creates the ideal conditions to continue deepening our commercial ties and, in particular, the trade of higher value-added products”, the ambassador mentioned.

“Argentina is internationally recognized for its high sanitary and quality standards, alongside systems that guarantee the traceability of our production and highly qualified human resources. We are a reliable and secure supplier of food for the world”, Caucino stated.
