Why 'F35 hit by Iran' is a big deal for world's most-advanced stealth fighter jet that was supposed to be 'unkillable'
A US F-35 stealth fighter jet sustained damage during a mission over Iran. The advanced aircraft made an emergency landing at a Middle Eastern air base. The pilot is safe. This incident raises questions about the effectiveness of stealth technolog...

US officials confirmed the aircraft was struck by what is believed to be Iranian fire. Iran has claimed it successfully targeted the jet using its air defence systems, though Washington has not fully confirmed that assertion.
Capt Tim Hawkins, spokesperson for US Central Command, said the fifth-generation aircraft was flying a combat mission when it was forced to land. He added that the jet landed safely and the pilot is stable.

Why this matters: The F-35 factor
The incident is significant because the F-35 is widely considered one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world and a cornerstone of US air power. The F-35 programme has already cost around $450 billion to date. According to a report by the US Government Accountability Office, it has also been plagued by mounting costs and delays, with total lifetime expenses projected to exceed $2 trillion over several decades.
Designed with stealth capabilities, the F-35 is built to evade radar detection and operate deep inside heavily defended airspace. A successful strike against it raises questions about whether adversaries are improving their ability to detect or track such aircraft.
The jet also relies on advanced sensor fusion, combining data from multiple sources into a single real-time battlefield view. This gives pilots a decisive edge in identifying and engaging threats before being detected.
In addition, the F-35 plays a central role in network-centric warfare, sharing data across aircraft, ships and ground systems. It functions not just as a fighter but as part of a larger combat network.

What a successful strike could indicate
Even limited damage to an F-35 is seen as strategically important. It could point to improvements in Iranian air defence systems or reveal gaps in how stealth aircraft are being deployed in contested airspace.Such an incident challenges the long-held perception that fifth-generation fighters can operate with near impunity in hostile environments.

2025 F-35 crashes and incidents
On January 28, 2025, a US Air Force F-35A crashed near Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska during a training flight. The aircraft was destroyed, but the pilot ejected with minor injuries. Reports indicated the crash was linked to frozen water in the hydraulic system. On July 30, 2025, a US Navy F-35C assigned to VFA-125 “Rough Raiders” crashed near Naval Air Station Lemoore in California. The pilot ejected safely and an investigation was launched.
A Royal Navy F-35B Lightning from the HMS Prince of Wales carrier group remained grounded at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in Kerala for 37 days from June 14 to July 21, 2025, after an emergency landing triggered by low fuel and bad weather led to a hydraulic failure. The aircraft was later repaired by a UK team. Specialist British engineers arrived in early July with spare parts transported via an Airbus A400M Atlas, and the jet was housed in an Air India hangar before departing safely.
Broader context of US losses
The development comes amid wider losses for US forces in the region. At least 16 US aircraft, including multiple MQ-9 Reaper drones, have been lost since the conflict began, according to a Bloomberg report. Some losses have been attributed to Iranian air defences, while others resulted from accidents and friendly fire. In one case, three F-15 fighter jets were mistakenly shot down by allied air defences, with all crew ejecting safely. In another, a KC-135 refuelling aircraft crashed in Iraq, killing all six personnel on board.
Despite these incidents, US officials say operations are continuing as planned. However, analysts note that the US has achieved only localised air superiority in parts of Iranian airspace.
Iran continues to carry out regional strikes and claims to have downed several US and Israeli drones. It has also suggested that the F-35 incident reflects upgrades to its integrated air defence network.
